I was out and about today (a public holiday) and spotted Thong Man walking. Its seems there is no holiday for him!

I have been catching a different train lately and haven't seen him for quite a while.

Last week, Thong man appeared happy with a recent hiatus in 'busts'.

He posited that there may be no more 'puppies' active. He bases this on his observations that school holidays (recently finished) are typically a period of high activity, but so far have been silent. Thong man is realistic enough to avoid jumping to rapid conclusions. But he expresses hope.

I asked him if the hiatus could be explained by his targets suddenly becoming clever and avoiding him. The explanation of them becoming smart, he believes, is unlikely as his estimate of their usual intelligence is quite low. As for moving out, then perhaps that aligns with his goals.

If his position bears out, I asked, would a supply vacuum bring in new dealers from neighbouring areas? Thong man did not answer that. Nobody knows what the future brings, but if Thong man is in it, it will certainly be interesting.

After inquiring of Thong Man's history he provided me with more information to explain things. His words:

Diacetyl Morphine (Heroin) isn't such a problem in my view: it kills them and they're better off dead! A clean merciful death too! If it's good stuff, you're stone dead before you've fully depressed the plunger! There's another colourful story about me that's been around since the late '70's! Just to bring you fully up to speed on all this long-running affair, I would further inform you as follows:- the letter of 14/11/99 was sent to six Schools at the time and was sent again to fifteen late last year, tho' without the note about ******'s story which has been current for less than 18 months and to which I was alerted by the same JP (***** *****)! However, I've been taking it in the back for seven years - since 10th December '95, to be exact! - and on ANZAC Day, I turned round! The message on my answering machine was first deployed on 26th April and has been continually revised and extended due to the exigencies of the moment into its present state since 2107 on Thursday 4th July: it has been heard by over 4000 (four thousand) callers since, who have been apprised of its existence by word of mouth and the transmission of SMS to some sixty M/P numbers, about half of which are shewn on my Teledex as "SPSG Anon" - you may infer who and what they might be! The letter in its current form was handed out to 318 Wynnum businesses last week with explanation about what it was all about (basically, that all the vandalism, graffiti, stealing in all forms and so on since January '98 that we're all getting sick of is down to just one Group - the SPSG!) and earnest encouragement to ring 3396.**** ASP and sent to thirty business fax numbers here and interstate also which included three Newspapers and Radio 4BC: Dr Goebbels would have been proud to know me! The SS-General letter has been restricted to those I know well and those, like yourself, who should know of it - about thirty people in all! When you've listened to the message, which runs for 2:53 and has some forty names on it, you'll be that much wiser and amused too! Just for the record, if you're under 16 or living at home, I require written permission signed by both your parents and counter-signed by a Q/Pol Sergeant or above before I'll even open "Kitty's" bonnet to Show you her 7½-litre V8 engine, let alone open, her door or allow you to hear the "instant earth-shaking thunder" of her starting! ******* **** and ***** have been in her, as has my son, and three of my ad hoc bodyguards - well, I do have enemies out there! Real ones!

Dear Whoever,

Back in May of this year, I nicked ******* **** for perhaps the thirtieth time in four
years driving unlicensed &/or disqualified in a vehicle on the Watch List - in fact I put him
in prison three times in five months late last year and early this year. He's a nice kid really
but even his step-father described him as being a "witless idiot" and I'm certainly not
prepared to stand idly by when I see him selling drugs to little kids either as has been the
case on a number of occasions in the past.

Anyway, to get even by way of "Payback" for this outrage, Mrs ****** (the Puppy who
got her own son ******* busted by betraying him to me early in January) who is also
******* ****'s aunt or other close relative and also possibly a lady friend in
comfortable circumstances fabricated a silly and malicious story which was totally untrue.

A lady[+] who doesn't quite fit Mrs ******'s description went into the Franklins building and
told a number of people including a Justice of the Peace and a shop assistant that she had
reported me to the Police because she had followed me round to all the local Primary Schools
(Manly, Wynnum Central, North and West) and watched me taking photographs of the little
kids with a Nikon camera fitted with a long telephoto lens.

Two problems with that nonsense: no such report was ever made to Police then or since and
at the times she claimed to have seen me at these various Schools which are not that far
apart, I was in fact walking to the City yet again - as in fact I did today and yesterday![*]
and although I had only got as far as Cannon Hill when I was taken ill, I was seen by the
crews of not less than three Police vehicles plus the cameras at Murarri and Wynnum
Central stations and by the ticket-collector/Station Master from whom I purchased a Reverse
ticket.

[*] Since 3/11/01, I walk to Strathpine or Bald Hills thrice weekly! [Nov 2001]

I do however own two Nikon cameras for which I have three lenses including a 35-210 zoom
and at no time during my walk (current best time being 1:55 to the Valley end of the Story
Bridge) did I notice either Mrs ****** or a well-dressed lady of quality following me on
foot or in a car!

PS That silly malicious lie got @40 kids in the ROLY-POLY
Group busted for drugs etc in three weeks!

Hadn't you and ****** ****** et alia heard that on or about the night
of the Full Moon at the end of January or start of February back in 99,
I caught JR and his then boy-friend ****** ***** "getting it on!",
"taking turn about!", however you choose to put it!?? In that vein,
I would point out that a faggot is a tied bundle of metal rods (hence
the words Fasces and Fascist) or of brush-wood (hence the word
Fascine) and is also the NATO code-name for the highly successful and
formidable Soviet MiG-15 of the Fifties tho' many still serve!

NOTES:

1) PUPPIES, DOGS & SUPER-DOGS are people who get their own Dealers busted by

The Thong Man gave me a copy of the hand-typed newsletter he distributes about the drug busts he makes. With his permission, I scanned it in to publish, and you can read it below to get a feel for what he gets up to. I have blanked out names, phone numbers and registration plates. Also, here is some terminology that may not be clear from the text:

dog/puppy - a person who betrays or informs on a dealer they set up
own-goal - person who commits an arrestable act witnessed by the Thong Man
C&I - close and intimate
SPSG - one of the criminal groups the Thong Man has categorised and tracks
sesh - drug-using session

The thong man

This is the story of the Thong Man, a remarkable man who lives in Cleveland, Australia.

I first met the Thong Man on the train around early 2005. Each evening, I try to catch the less-crowded 4:49 from Brisbane Central, and I soon noticed an old man habitually sitting in the same carriage. He was remarkable, because

he wore only bright blue overalls, with obviously scissor-cut sleeves
he wore cheap, worn-through thongs
he appeared to be tall and extremely fit for his obviously advanced years (70? 80?)
he was accompanied by pungent cigarette and body odour.

Who was this guy? I thought. He must work in the city. But as what? An obscure labourer? He seemed pleasant enough on the train and never bothered anyone. His habit of removing his Thongs and placing them under the seat was even mildly comforting. I quickly disregarded him as simply a colourful passenger and returned to my reading.

But then I found out that Thong Man walks 30km from Cleveland to Brisbane each day! (except Sunday) I think he leaves in the morning, reaches the city by the afternoon and then catches the train home for tea. I suspect he always buys a one-way ticket.

I drove past him at lunch one short day. He was walking towards the city and was instantly recognisable with his sky-blue overalls, glasses, thongs and square jaw.

We began talking on the train. I asked "How was the walk today?" and he slowly glid into the details, explaining the interesting way that coarse bitumen wore through his thongs faster than anything else. It turns out that Thong Man buys his thongs in bulk, stores them in his laundry and goes through a pair in a week (or so).

I also discovered that he had a particularly keen interest in World War II, and military and social history broadly. His ability to recount details such as names, quantities and vehicle codes was suprising.

What was to suprise me even more, was that the Thong Man would turn out to be a retired NSW police officer. In retirement he continues to be an active disrupter of local drug dealing, and consequently has been the target of numerable hit-and-run attempts.

He claims that after having turned down a $50,000 bribe in August 1999 he has subsequently faced knives, pistols and more than 20 hit-and-run attempts on his life. His response has been to fight back by publishing newsletters that summarise the drug busts he has personally been involved with (usually as a privileged witness since his oath remains valid), letter dropping in business districts with news of organised crime activity, providing an audio version of the newsletter on an answering machine and sending SMS updates of offenses to a lengthy list of subscribers.

The Thong Man is unemployed, though too busy to worry about it.

When I enquired about his past work, the Thong Man related that as a serving officer he had been tasked with getting heroin out of NSW schools in the 1970s.

The Thong Man watches a group of people he calls the "Scrag/Polecat Subgroup" (SPSG). He describes them as elements of the lower-working, upper-welfare class with criminal behaviour, many from a local State School who engage in dealing methamphetamines, heroin and prostitution. The Thong Man would gleefuly support capital punishment for this group.

When the Thong Man smiles, his upper teeth are missing.

The Thong Man is an interesting passenger on the Cleveland train.
